A SAP referral is a referral to a Substance Abuse Professional (SAP) for assessment and treatment. SAP referrals may be made in a variety of situations, such as when an employee has violated a company's drug and alcohol policies, or when an individual has been arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
In the case of a SAP referral made due to a violation of a company's drug and alcohol policies, the referral is typically made by the employee's employer or a designated representative. The employee may be required to complete a SAP assessment as part of their return to work process, or as a condition of continued employment.
In the case of a SAP and/or SAE (non- SAP) referral made following an arrest for driving under the influence, the referral may be made by the court or by the individual's probation officer or attorney. The individual may be required to complete a SAP assessment and follow any recommendations made by the SAP as part of their probation, adjudication of their pending case and/or as a condition of having their driver's license reinstated.
SAP assessments are conducted by a qualified Substance Abuse Professional who has been trained and certified to assess individuals for substance abuse issues and make recommendations for education, treatment, and follow-up testing. The SAP may work with the individual to develop a plan for addressing their substance abuse issues and ensuring that they are able to return to work or resume their normal activities in a safe and responsible manner.
